My theory on that is you basically have a swimming venue for three weeks

so you might as well fill it up with events for the entire three weeks. The Olympics is about product now so that's a lot of seats/tv time you can fill too. It's always bothered me that guys like Spitz or Phelps can win eight medals which makes me think those events aren't really that differentiated, just testing VO2 max over and over again. I mean, sure maybe somebody can out technique someone else in the backstroke but, it's the same tests. You'll never see that in running, some guy winning, 100m, 200m, 400m 1600m relay etc. You might have a 200m 400m winner but that's about it.

On a weird aside, went swimming in the dinky 25m? pool after playing tennis on Monday and did some of that stuff for the first time in 30 years maybe. Now my back is sore. but...where was I going with this...but... I was....it felt pretty good!!!
